Since 1956, a large number of Xidan's paintings have been shown and won awards in national and international exhibitions. Many works have also been exhibited and well received in various international art shows, including exhibitions held in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, United States, and France. Works have been regularly published by renowned publishing house within China. Both Shanghai TV and Hong Kong ATV have produced prime-time programs titled ‘Watercolourist Xidan Chen’.
After 1999, solo exhibitions, ‘Xidan Chen’s Watercolour’, were held in Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Paris. Works were collected not only by international art collectors, but also by many art galleries and museums including China Art Gallery and Guan Shan Yue Art Gallery.
In 1979, initiated and founded Shanghai Watercolour Association, acted as Secretary, Vice-President, and Art Consultant.
1989-1992, judicator in China Watercolour Exhibition.
In 1999, founded Shenzhen Watercolour Society, has been acting as President.
In 2002, acted as vice-chair of the organizing committee and later as judicator in China Watercolour and Sketch Exhibition.
In 2005, became registered artist of Cité Internationale des Arts Paris.
In April 2006, attended International Chinese Master’s Watercolour Exhibition and conference, which was held in Taipei.
In 2006, founded Shanghai Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery, has been acting as Director.
In October 2006, the painting ‘Shanghai Lane’ (created in 1961) was selected and included in China Centenary Watercolour Exhibition.
In the same year, Xidan was elected as a member of China Centenary Watercolour Exhibition organizing committee. Later, member of editing committee of the publication China Centenary Watercolour.
In May 2007, work ‘The Bund of Shanghai’ was selected and exhibited in International Watercolour Exhibition, which was held in Taiwan.
In August 2007, invited by Hong Kong Central-West District Government, Xidan participated in ‘Watercolour Exhibition - Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’.
In 2008, 2 works were selected for exhibition in ‘21 Century Watercolour’ held by Royal Watercolour Society UK at Bankside Gallery London, won Windsor and Newton Prize.
2009 - 2010, Initiated and planned the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition.
February - March 2010, Exhibited in the Australian Watercolour Institute Annual Exhibition, held at Gosford Regional Art Gallery.
April 2010, works exhibited in China Master's Invitation Exhibition held by Baiyaxuan Gallery Shanghai.
June 2010, became an honorary member of the Australian Watercolour Institute.
December 2010 - January 2011, Exhibited in the Australian Watercolour Institute Annual Exhibition, held at Mosman Art Gallery Sydney.
20th March - 20th April 2011, Exhibit in Shenzhen Watercolour Artists Invitation Exhibition, held at Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery Shanghai.
30th March - 10th April 2011 Work 'Milan Galleria' exhibit at the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour Annual Exhibition, held at the Mall Galleries London.
22nd October - 3rd December 2011, Work 'Red Door' exhibit at the National Watercolor Society 91st Annual Exhibition, held at NWS Gallery 915 South Pacific Ave., San Pedro, California, USA.
22nd October 2011, Work 'Red Door" was awarded JJC Industries Wholesaler of Daniel Smith Manufactured Products Award.
December 2011 - January 2012, Works 'Roman Colisseum' and 'London Street' exhibited in the Australian Watercolour Institute Annual Exhibition, held at Gosford Regional Gallery.
March 2012, Work 'Victoria & Albert Museum' exhibited in the 200th Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour Annual Exhibition, held at the Mall Galleries, London.
April 2012, Work 'Milan' exhibited in the 3rd International Watercolour Exhibition, held at Bellagio, Italy.
August 2012, Work 'German Village' exhibited at the International Watercolour Biennial, held at Castle of Bourgogne, Belgium.

September 2014, 2 works exhibiting in the 2nd Watercolour International held in Greece.
2nd - 26th October 2014, Work 'Morning Ferry' exhibiting in Associazione Italiana Acquerellisti's 40th Anniversary Exhibition, held in Milan, Italy.
21st February - 3rd April 2015, Co-curator, ACROSS THE WATER: CHINA - AUSTRALIA Modern Masters of Watercolour. Work 'Street Stall' exhibiting in the show. Juniper Hall, 250 Oxford Street, Paddington, Sydney.
17th August - 30th September 2015: Xidan Chen New Creations Exhibition, showcasing 60 works created in the year of 2015. Held at Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery, Shanghai
12th- 19th October 2016: Beauty Rests Here - Xidan Chen Watercolour Exhibition and The Friends of Xidan Chen Watercolour Exhibition, curated by Shenzhen Art Museum. Xidan's 115 works were on display, along with works by Alvaro Castagnet, Andrew Kish III, David Poxon, John Salminen, Konstantin Sterkhov, Brian Strattion, David Van Nunen, and Joseph Zbukvic.
